♥ What are some foods/beverages to avoid if one has an ulcer, and any natural remedies to help?
I know that anything high in acidity should definitely be avoided.
Caffeine (coffee) and smoking should be avoided. (I’m working on that, honestly). But what are some other foods/beverages that are “bad” for the stomach if one has an ulcer or is constantly sick, no matter what?
I must mention, that i am a Vegetarian so i eat a lot of fruit and veggies, i do not eat junk food, i drink water, juice and coffee. (Sometimes Iced tea but No soda, unless it’s gingerale). I do not drink regular milk. I avoid spicy foods (even though i like them) because they totally kill my stomach.
I have had issues with my stomach for a while. It’s seriously ruining my life because most days i am so sick in the morning i end up either leaving late for work, or i have to call in. (And i don’t like doing either). I’ve missed more time at this current job (in the last year) than i have missed at every job i’ve ever had combined; and i don’t like that at all. I am discouraged.
Anyways most days I am throwing up (sometimes blood) and being sick every which way from Sunday usually every day. (this has gone on for years) The Doctor put me on stomach meds that make me sick (side effects) BUT i am trying to give them time to work before i complain about them. They have only helped slightly with the acid reflux (or whatever you want to call it) but they make me sick in other ways. I still am nauseous regularly and my stomach is still in pain regardless. (I have not thrown up blood since i went on the meds last week but i have thrown up. Which is good but bad and confusing). Anyways, Today, now, i am in pain and sick. (again) And i am tired, very tired of not being able to function, and/or spending my days in pain and sometimes in the bathroom (sorry, it’s embarassing) and feeling tired and like crap.
Are there other foods/beverages that i should aviod (other than what i have already eliminated naturally due to being a Veg) AND are there any all natural remedies that maybe might help with this issue?
This is quite long, sorry. But i need advice because i’m sick of being sick. Thanks so much.
xoxo ♥
PS: Also, i am no fool. I firmly believe in Doctors though i don’t go often. I am finally dealing with this by being responsible and going to a GP. (i was not at liberty to do this for a while). I am in the process of being scheduled for *routine* tests for other things much worse to rule them out, but i think it’s just my ulcer. I am not a pessimist, but i am discouraged at present. What can i do?
EDIT: I am not dumb … but i had to look up candida LOL. I never heard of it before. I don’t think that is the problem, but thanks for the info. xoxo
Okay Ladies and Gentlemen … Firstly I would like to say “Thanks” for all of these super-fabulous answers. Really, they were ALL very helpful and i appreciate the time EACH of you spent to provide your thoughts.
Secondly, and most importantly .. THAT is precisely the reason that i am putting the Question to vote. (Since most of you are contacts/fans you know i *rarely* do this!) But ALL of these answers were just fabulous and i really cannot pick a BA on this one. So, applaud yourselves, you ALL did very well. Good Luck with the Voting, and THANKS from my heart to yours, once again. I ♥ you all tons.

You’ve already done a good job removing the harmful things, now you need to add garlic and fermented cabbage and coconut oil. these are all full of natural antibiotics and probiotics to help with H. Pylori die-off.
Cabbage rejuvelac recipe can be found here:

also search Bee’s site for more ideas to help. Her site is mostly devoted to candida, but ulcers are often a common sign that candida has a hold on you. It’s a symptom of systemic candida.
Here’s a link to an article specifically about H. Pylori (the ulcer culprit) from her site:

this sounds awful
i was going to tell you to avoid spicy foods, but you know that already. stick with bland foods as much as you can… crackers, bananas, rice, toast, etc. when my stomach is upset, i turn to pepto bismol as a last resort, but ginger pills and peppermint really help. you can go to any health food store, general nutrition center, and most supermarkets for the ginger pills. take 2 with ginger ale and it should help calm things down. i hope you feel better. thinking of you:-)
this is hard to swallow but get rid of the coffee .. I know that is a biggie. I have stomach issues to and coffee is a big prob for me.. at least coffee on an empty tummy is a big no no. and certain fruits and veggies can also cause problems..
watch the sugar and artificial sweeteners, really the fun is gone when you have a stomach ulcer.. also booze is bad.
lots of bland stuff and milk products help..
good luck girl I feel for you, you really sound like you are sick.. hope you feel better soon..
After reading your story, I’m wondering if you might have a food allergy of some sort. Have you tried to eliminate any foods? Strange as it may seem, clinical and experimental evidence points to food allergy as a primary cause of ulcers.
Here are the items I would recommend to avoid:
Caffeinated beverages like tea, coffee etc
Any high fatty meats
All high fat milk and milk products
Do away with any sugar and spicy foods
All deep fried foods
Citrus fruits
Alcohol
Aspirin
Ibuprofen
Naproxen
And please try to quit smoking!
I know you avoid allot of these, but, try to eliminate any type of a citrus fruits or drinks. This would be your first line of “natural” defense in easing the pain of and in healing an ulcer is to eliminate those products which cannot be tolerated or continue to cause you discomfort. Try munching several “mini-meals” at regular times throughout the day, as opposed to eating two or three large meals. Smaller meals translate to less acid production at each meal and therefore, more frequent ulcer relief as most ulcer pain subsides for a few hours following a meal.
If these recommendations do not help you sufficiently, try eating lots of cabbage, which is a good source of insoluble fiber (in the form of cellulose). Try eating at least one “healthy serving” of steamed cabbage once a day for about two weeks. Besides its fiber content, cabbage contains an amino acid (glutamine) that has been shown, in some research, to promote the healing of ulcers.
Please, be aware ulcers can present greater health risks, and that you still need to see a health care provider about them. You can discuss alternative treatment options with your doctor, and let him or her know that you would prefer alternative remedies first before heading straight for the antacids or prescription drugs.
Hope this helps? Good Luck
Hello Beans,
I’m sorry you’re feeling so awful. There is one thing that nobody has addressed yet. Please research H. pylori. Often, this can be the culprit for people with gastric ulcers. There is a relatively simple test that can be done in a doctor’s office to rule it out. If it IS H. pylori, the treatment is antibiotics. Many people have gone through life with persistent stomach ulcers, only to find out they had this bug. I think it is worth a try. I’m glad they are doing some other tests on you, too. Good luck, and God Bless.
ohhhh my lil beans baby .. i didn’t know……. i’m so sorry my beautifull friend that you feel like such shite …. ((((huggs))))
first up luv you have to eliminate the foods that are causing the acid reflux ….. my educated guess would be dairy products ie ~ all milk, cheese, butter (yes it is low in lactose but will give me nasty acid reflux within 5 minutes of eating it …. icecream, chocolate, yoghurt) ….. ditch the foods you have intolerant reactions to and then go about healing the ulcer …… other symptoms of lactose intolerance you might be suffering from are ~
wet far*ting …….. sorry, no other way to put it ……. mucous in the stools, bloating and cramping, digestive troubles such as constipation, belching and burping, gassiness and ribbony and stringy shaped bowel movements or rabbit pellet shaped movements are all symptoms of lactose intolerance. It is possible that you have an intolerance to milk and dairy products buddy ……… many many people find it extremely difficult to digest milk and dairy products because of the lactose contained therein….. Lactose intolerance can cause acid reflux, alternating bouts of constipation & diahorrea and will also lead to a compromised digestive system thus laying the groundwork for a body which is extremely susceptible to developing nose, throat, sinus, ear, bronchial, bladder and other infections as well.
Ditch the milk and dairy products for a few days and pump up your intake of leafy and green vegies, broccolli, kale, chard, buk choy …. even carrotts ….. and fresh fruit also ….. oranges too ….. all are rich in calcium……….. go heavy on the green vegies …. they’ll help enormously to realkalise and regenerate your stressed system.
Get your 10 – 15 mins daily of safe sun exposure (vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption and is known as the sunshine vitamin).
The calcium and magnesium and vitamin C found in leafy and green vegies in particular like broccolli, kale, chard, celery, buk choy is an easily assimilabe form and supplies the natural magnesium and vitamin C that is essential for effective calcium assimilation …… last time i looked there wasn’t any magnesium and vitamin C in yoghurt or cheese …… ditch all the dairy for a few days and ditch the antacids too …… the antacids neutralise all the stomach acids thus leaving you back at square one when you eat again but with below par digestive juices this time hence you get more nausea and acid reflux and you take more antacids …… acid reflux is caused by continuing to eat foods to which you are intolerant …… and thus cannot digest …. acid reflux is caused by not having enough stomach acids to digest your food …. it is NOT caused by having too much stomach acid …… truly …… you think ima whack but ditch the dairy and see if your symptoms abate … give it 3 – 4 days and if the acid reflux is no better i’ll go he.
hey beautifull don’t stress ……. i ditched all the milk and dairy products ….. cos of the pain they were causing me …. i’m severely lactose intolerant, coeliac, soy intolerant, blahblahblah you know the rest ….. so if i can do it anybody can ….. and i was having wicked acid reflux, bloating, cramping, nausea, achy bones, nasty mood swings …… pinpoint things you are intolerant to ……… even eggs fry my brain ….. i wake up next day in a filthy mood with black shiners under my eyes if i eat them ….. fairdinkum looks like i’ve been king hit …….. foods can have a dramatic on how you feel and your bounce and vitality.
check out this link on resolving your ulcers naturally …… raw cabbage juice is apparently spectacular for ulcers.
