Acid reflux is the condition in which the gastric juices or acids go back to the esophagus from the stomach. This is caused by a lot of reasons that start from the irregularity of the esophageal sphincter or valve. This valve controls the flow and direction of the gastric acids.
Some other reasons blamed for the acid reflux are: 1.) obesity and wrong habits in eating such as lying down right after eating, eating too much and eating too fast 2.) smoking- wherein nicotine irritates the esophageal sphincter 3.) pregnancy- the baby is putting much pressure on the abdomen and 4.) stress- which causes excess production of gastric acids in the stomach.

Drugs and medications for acid reflux are readily available. They are to be seen in adverts, some medications for heartburn are sold over the counter, and most doctors are happy to prescribe them on a promise of immediate termination of the crippling pain of acid reflux. After all that, you are surely asking yourself of medications for acid reflux are in any way effective when it is a matter of fixing the real cause of your condition of acid reflux and if the temporary respite justifies the side effects.
Heartburn, also known as GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), comes about when the valve in the esophagus (the LES or lower esophageal sphincter) becomes weak and instead of acting one-way, lets stomach content flow back into the esophagus. Usually, after glutition, the LES opens to let food into the stomach before closing to prevent acid from returning into the esophagus. The backward flow of acid coming from this acid reflux is often noticed as a burning sensation that is called heartburn. Therefore, acid reflux patients often experience a particular burning feeling under the breastbone, often coming at night.

Many might be wondering if acid reflux medication really works. Some would say yes and other might say no. To evaluate the medication, it is best to understand first what acid reflux is. Gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD is another term for acid reflux. It usually occurs when the esophageal sphincter opens and loses its force that allows the food and acid reflux into the esophagus. When this happens the patient may feel a burning sensation called heartburn. This condition requires immediate diagnosis and treatment. If the condition is left unattended it can badly corrode the lining of the esophagus that may cause inflammation and possibly even cancer of the esophagus. Persistent acid reflux with heartburn can affect the person’s daily activity and can seriously impinge on the esophagus.
Acid reflux medication is not the remedy of choice even if they can treat the symptom. There are four classes of medications for acid reflux: antacids, alginates, H2 antagonist and proton pump inhibitor. There is a fifth class of medication which is being opposed by doctors – the natural medication that is gaining popularity because according to some it does not only treat the symptoms, but it also cure the disease.

Acid reflux affects tens of millions of people, to one degree or another, worldwide.
The symptoms may include; chest pain, reflux of stomach acid, heartburn, difficulty swallowing, nausea, abdominal pain, labored breathing and sleeplessness.
If left unchecked, serious medical problems can occur. The constant splashing up of stomach acid can burn the tender tissue of the esophagus causing scar tissue to develop. This can thicken the walls of the esophagus making it difficult to swallow. This often leads to a disease called Barrettâs Syndrome, which can be a precursor to esophageal cancer.
