Does anyone out there know of anything other than tums that I can take for acid reflux?
I am 20 weeks pregnant, and I have acid reflux (before pregnancy) the medication that I took, I cannot take while pregnant. I have been using tums, but everything I eat causes it, and at times it gets so bad the tums have no affect. Any suggestions?

in my first pregnancy malox worked wonders… thats the only thing that worked for me … so give it a try… good luck.. right after you chew em drink some water… worked wonders. goood luck
Gaviscon? I know that my mom takes it for her acid reflux and I sometimes do, too. It helps and works fairly quickly. Hopefully it helps.
Seltzer water.
And lots of small meals rather than a few big ones.
Well this is an interesting one which I discovered by mistake… You know “Love Hearts” sweets?
They work wonders, they worked better than Tums for me!! They are very chalky and really cut the acid reflux.
It may sound silly since they are not even a medicine, but it’s worth a try, they work for me!!
Good luck, hope you feel better soon!
Have you tried liquid Maalox or Mylanta? That’s what I used, it didn’t help a lot but it gave some relief. I also proped my pills up and slept almost upright many nights and that actually worked betted than the medicine.
A glass of milk can help. Be careful of how much calcium you’re taking. When my sister was pregnant, she was taking her prenatal vitamins, extra calcium, drinking lots of milk, and taking tums. All that calcium caused her heart to race.
Bananas may help settle your stomach. Red and white disc peppermints may help also.
my doc said i could take zantac or pepcid ac…the tums had no effect on me either. i will warn you though towards the end of the pregnancy nothing really helped. GOOD LUCK!
I hear ya:) I’ve been living on Tums and if the heart burn isn’t enough to make me cry the taste of the chalky tums is:) The best advice would be to call your doctor – because they know the full list of prescription medication for acid reflux that would be safe to take while pregnant. Drink milk – which i can’t stand either – but it does help and also eat smaller meals more often and try to avoid the foods that really make it bad. Good luck:)
I had the EXACT same problem. I was prescribed gallons ofGaviscon Advance. It’s impossible to overdose on and can be taken whilst pregnant and breastfeeding. It works too! I recommend the Peppermint flavour, don’t go with Aniseed YUK!!!
Mine got unbearable around 30 weeks and I found that drinking milk helped especially just before laying down to sleep. Keeping yourself propped up with pillows or raising the head of your bed can help.
I hope that helps you. Good luck and congratulations on your pregnancy!!
I used to be hounded by acid. I had to take Tums by the handful, then my doctor prescribed Rabeprazole NA 20 mg.
They’re little tiny yellow pills. One in the morning at breakfast, no acid all day.
Papaya extract is said to regulate acid production and is safe during pregnancy.
However if you need something stronger call Motherisk.org all they do is study safety during pregnancy and lactation. They are one of the best sources of information in the world, they know more than most doctors, and if you use a 10-10 long distance plan it will cost less than $2.
Motherisk’s Home Line – (416) 813-6780 – for information about the risk or safety of prescription and over-the-counter drugs, herbal products, chemicals, x-rays, chronic disease and infections during pregnancy. About a week after I found out I was pregnant, I started getting terrible acid reflux and heartburn for the first time in my life, tums didn’t work for me either. My doctor told me he could prescribe something, but I’m always hesistant to take medicine during pregnancy, (This is my 3rd) unless absolutely necessary. I started hunting the internet for a natural cure. I found everything from mustard to apple cider vinegar, nothing appealing. Then I found one recommendation for almonds. Yes, almonds. I happened to have some mixed nuts on hand, so I picked out the almonds and ate them. Low and behold, my symptoms and pain were quickly gone. I started eating 5 or 6, before a meal, or when I was hurting. After a couple of weeks I rarely even got heartburn anymore. I don’t even eat them, unless for an occasional flare up. Try it. It’s alot safer than any of those medications, in fact they’re good for you. Good luck.
dont eat!no only joking DO EAT DO EAT DO EAT.
my gp prescribed lansoprazale.
Dont drink orange juice that made me really bad in pregnancy.
Rich tea biscuits settled my tummy?!?!
hope this helps:-)
No Pepto Bismol like the first answer suggested…Pepto is a salicylate like aspirin and, like aspirin, linked to birth defects. Check with your doctor. Mine allowed me to take Tagamet, which you can buy over the counter and works quite well.
