Easily Avoidable Acid Reflux Causes

Article by Shelly Bray

In most cases, acid reflux is easily preventable. A great deal of acid reflux factors can be controlled through lifestyle changes and mild medication. Dealing with this issue is easier to do when you understand what is causing it. To find out what your specific causes are, it is best to visit your doctor and have them do a physical. Your doctor will look at your physical fitness and ask about your lifestyle and together you will identify which acid reflux causes are making this disorder happen to you. Here is a look at some of the usual causes.

Eating the wrong foods is the most common cause of acid reflux. When it is caused by the wrong foods it is called heartburn, which is generally temporary. If you get heartburn on a regular basis, you need to take a serious look at your food choices. Do you eat large amounts of spicy food? Are you eating chocolate often? Do you eat foods that contain lots of garlic? Foods that contain tomato as an ingredient can also cause heartburn. Avoiding these common ingredients is not as difficult as it may sound. Cutting chocolate out of your diet may not be fun but it’s bound to be better than dealing with heartburn.

How is your weight? We understand that this is a sensitive question. We understand if considering your weight is difficult. But weight is usually a factor for those dealing with acid reflux. If your weight falls into the normal range, you are less likely to have issues with acid reflux than if your weight falls into the overweight or obese ranges. You may find when you get your weight under control that you have “cured” other health issues. Your acid reflux and weight gain may be caused by the same foods. When you cut out these foods, you are addressing both issues.

Your acid reflux can be triggered if you bend over shortly after eating a heavy meal. This is because, when your stomach is full, it produces more acid to help break down your meal so that it can be fully absorbed by your body. When your stomach is full, you are more likely to experience fluctuations in the “little flap” that keeps your food and stomach acid in your stomach. Because bending over can cause this flap to fail, you can end up with acid in your esophagus or even your mouth. Staying upright after you eat can help you avoid this situation. Acid reflux does not have to be difficult to avoid. Reducing stress, eating right, and making good lifestyle choices is all it takes. Consult your physician if you think you have any of the symptoms of acid reflux. With your doctor on your side you will be able to decide on the best course of treatment and lifestyle changes to help you avoid problems with heartburn.
