How does taking pills cure acid reflux if it is caused by a weak led valve which allows the acid to flow up?

By neutralizing the acid in the stomach.
Probably you should consider reading the sites below,
If you make it a habit to sleep with your head in an elevated position that would reduce heartburn during your sleep. This can be achieved using one or two extra pillows. If you can afford it, getting a bed that can be raised, a bed similar to the ones used in hospitals would be a great idea.
If not, you can raise the head side of your bed with blocks of wood or some thing similar
antacid/acid neutralizing pills aren’t a cure they are a treatment which only works for as long as you are taking them. They work by neutralizing the acid so as if there is reflux(due to the weak valve) it doesn’t burn the inside of the oesophagus.
They are short term fix’s for the problem. Pills like Antacid and Tums etc will help ease the pain. For a long term solution try looking here http://www.acidrefluxdietguide.com
They actually shut off some of the pumps making acid in the stomach so that there will be less acid made. If there is less acid made, it should be all used up in digestion and therefore not around to reflux into the esophagus.
If you look-they are actually called acid reducers
