Try Zantac 75. It is now over the counter.
I have a similar problem: avoid spicy and sour foods, so garlic and onions are very offensive, and citrus fruits like oranges. To reduce this, you can take MOTILIUM, but you should consult a doctor. Tea with honey, I’m not sure, but honey is a home remedy that works for a number of things. After you eat, sit with your head inches above your feet for fifteen minutes, and try not to throw up because it could cause esophagitis (if i spelled it correctly). Don’t bend down after eating, it aggravates the acid reflux..Hope you feel better
no hot food
I get this quite a bit. If it’s really bad, then I mix a bit of bicarbonate of soda in water and drink it. It makes an alkaline solution which helps to neutralize the acid in your stomach.
It’ll taste a bit weird (sort of salty…) and might make you burp a little but it usually helps.
Foods to avois include: spicy things, things containing citric acid (e.g. oranges/orange juice, kiwi fruit etc…) and anything that normally doesn’t sit well in your stomach.
Don’t bend over or slouch too much either, and try to sleep with your head elevated.
If it’s always as bad as you say though, then go and see a doctor… if acid refulx is left untreated it can lead to bigger and worse problems, such as anaemia, dizzyness and maybe oesopahgal cancer (alothough this is rare so don’ worry too much about it!)
Tums alone is NOT a good idea if it’s acid reflux. Tums just turns off the acid for a short period of time, then causes an increase in acid production. So they are the worst thing you can use if you have acid reflux or GERD. That’s called rebound acid production and it’s horrible for GERD sufferers.
Over the counter famotidine (Pepcid), and ranitidine (Zantac) are probably your best bet until you can get to the doctor for prescription-strength medication. If you have the feeling break through acid while on these medications, then yes you can add a Tums or Rolaids, but take Pedcid or Zantac regularly then add the Tums whenever you feel you need them.
Raising the height of the head of your bed is also a good idea; as little as 2 inch elevation can keep the acid down in your tummy rather than in your throat. Put a book under each leg at the head of your bed. Pillows to prop yourself up do not do the same thing and will not work.
Quit eating at least 4-6 hours before bed, avoid dairy and spicy foods at dinner, reduce caffeine intake, and if drinking DECAF tea makes you feel better then do it. But I would not eat or drink anything 4-6 hours before bed.
The acid constantly washing over your esophagus will cause lesions that can become cancerous. This is very serious. Get the acid under control today and get in to see your doctor as soon as you are able. You can probably count on being on the prescription medication for at least a month or two, then they’ll re-evaluate you after that.
