Questions about acid reflux?

I have had acid reflux now for the past couple of years and I have a few questions about it.

1. What causes acid reflux?
2. What can be done to prevent it? (other than medication, eating less acidic food, eating earlier in the evening)
3. What, if any, are long term side effects of acid reflux if left untreated?

When my daughter started preschool at 4 years old, she started getting what seems like the stomach flu at least a dozen times every winter. This is the fourth year in a row we have dealt with it. It starts out with her throwing up and then a couple of days of dry heaves or just yellow bile (sorry for the graphic description). She is kind of a thin girl anyway so even losing a pound or two is not good for her. Also she missed about 20 days of school last year and the school is strict about attendance. In fact they even send me letters saying they could take me to court over the amount of days she has missed. I’ve asked three different pediatricians about this and the first pediatrician even did some tests (x rays) of her intestines and bowels. Her intestines are fine; no obstructions or nothing unusual was found in those tests. I’ve thought of allergies, or possibly acid reflux but no one seems to have a definite answer. Does anyone else have a child with a similar problem?

Acid reflux (Gastro-oesophageal reflux)

Acid reflux (Gastro-oesophageal reflux, GERD, Heartburn) is a condition where the lower oesophageal sphincter (the muscular ring at the lower end of the oesophagus) is abnormally relaxed and allows the stomach’s acidic contents to flow back or ‘reflux’ into the gullet (oesophagus). It can also cause heartburn.

Acid reflux is a common condition and the most frequent cause of indigestion in the US.

She use to suffer from acid reflux and colic. Apparently the reflux and silent reflux went away. We have tried everything, routine, supplements for babies (Chamomile Calm, Calmes Forte for children), she doesn’t drink or eat sweets, we have consulted with her doctor, and nobody can help us. They tell us that is her genetic makeup. Or they say she is just hyperactive. My daughter is such a light sleeper. She could hear the slightest noise in her sleep, and when she wakes up, thats it. It takes hours to get her back to sleep. And the 5-7 hours she does sleep, she is so restless and sometimes she wakes up and sleeps even less!! She has been like this from the moment we took her home from the hospital. She has never been a good sleeper. I tell the doctors and they never take me seriously. I ask them if there could be an underlying illness, because I have read that that’s a possibility, and they tell me she seems very healthy. Has anybody else been through this? ??

Acid reflux is a relatively minor disease. Acid reflux can usually be controlled by making some lifestyle changes. With proper care, you can even forget that you suffer from this condition. Of course, when you do experience an attack it can be a little scary. To keep from panicking, you need to understand what the major acid reflux causes are. Avoiding an attack is easier to do if you know what can cause it, after all. You have control over most causes of this disorder although there are some that are purely medical. The following are some of the major causes of acid reflux and what you can do.

A lot of the time, acid reflux is caused by eating the wrong foods. Heartburn, a temporary issue, is another name for acid reflux and is usually used in these cases. If you get heartburn on a regular basis, you need to take a serious look at your food choices. Are spicy foods a large part of your diet? How much chocolate do you eat on a regular basis? Do you eat foods that contain lots of garlic? Heartburn can also be caused by foods containing tomatoes. It seems like a long list of common ingredients, but the truth is that most of these things can be very easily avoided. Giving up chocolate is no fun for anyone but it beats dealing with regular heartburn.

Acid Reflux Causes ? Know About Major Causes

Acid reflux is mainly caused due to regurgitation or refluxing of partly digested food back to esophagus. This reflux causes inflammation in food tube leading to burning sensations and pain in stomach and digestive tract. Once food has reached stomach, the lid of sphincter muscle should close properly and prevent food from refluxing back. But when due to some reason sphincter muscle fails to do so it results in acid reflux.

Though the root causes are often unclear, perhaps the most prevalent acid reflux cause is a poor diet. Acid reflux occurs during digestion, when the stomach churns up acid or refluxes it into the esophagus, causing a burning sensation in the chest or throat. So if you eat too many highly acidic foods like tomato sauces and/or fatty, fried foods, the stomach has to process an overabundance of acid. Too much acid can push back through a valve between the stomach and the esophagus called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). Acid reflux culprits include but are not limited to tomato based sauces, fried and fatty foods, chocolate, alcohol, citrus fruits, peppers, and caffeinated beverages
