How To Prevent Baby Acid Reflux

Baby acid reflux is a condition that doctors have not yet completely researched and that is often a little misunderstood as well. From recent statistics, one fifth or so of the eight million babies born each year in the US suffer from acid reflux, and babies with handicaps that are developmental or neurological are even more at risk from this condition.

In simple terms, acid reflux, also called GERD (gastro esophageal reflux disease) is a mechanical problem in the digestive system, which can be corrected. In a healthy person, there is a circular muscle acting as a valve at the junction of the stomach and the esophagus (called the lower esophageal sphincter) and stopping stomach acids from flowing back up the esophagus. Acid reflux happens when that sphincter cannot retain the acids in the stomach. These then move into the throat sometimes as far as the larynx. Numerous symptoms can result from acid reflux leading to complications like infections, pain, ulcers, difficulties in eating, vocal disorders and even cancer in the long run.

Baby acid reflux remedies?

I was just wanting to know if anyone knows of anything that can help my one month old daughter? She has a little bit of acid reflux and I was just curious if there was something I could give her for it. Thanks!

I am breastfeeding exclusively and really plan/want to continue. I can’t think of anything that I am eating (if that is a proven theory) that would be causing this problem. Best I can tell, she is having huge pockets of air in her tummy (even after 30 mins of burping her) and she makes these grunting noises for hours until she finally gets it up and then spits up. …OR….she just starts making a noise like she is going to spit up and then projectile pukes to the point even of “heaving” like an adult would do. She doesnt cry when it happens, so I would assume that it’s not acid reflux like many have suggested. I have tried changing my diet some…but can’t narrow it down. I am thinking of switching to drinking soy milk myself just in case something in regular milk is bothering her. I have tried a number of things that I didnt even list here…and am willing to try pretty much anything.
