Acid Reflux Diet – Can What You Eat Help Your Heartburn?

Article by Iain Duigan

Most people believe that an acid reflux diet, designed around avoiding certain types of foods can actually stop the problem they are having with heartburn and acid indigestion. I certainly believe that it can go a long way to doing so.

Some foods that have been shown to cause this problem are:

ChocolateMintCoffeeFruit juiceOnionsTomato based foodsCaffeineCitrus fruitsSpicy FoodsFried FoodsFatty FoodsYea, that’s right, all the good ones.

An attack can also be triggered by other food related events, such as:

The time of day the food is eatenHow close to bedtime food is ingestedOver-eatingEating too fastI think we can see from this that keeping a careful eye on what we are eating, when we are eating it and how we are eating is important in our attempts to control this problem we suffer from.

It’s just as important to have a suitable diet to follow as it is to be aware of what foods should and shouldn’t be eaten.

Excellent eating plans can be found nearly anywhere on the net, but I’m going to let you know a few things that can help you here.

Firstly though, I wanted to talk about milk. One of the best things to soothe an attack of acid reflux. It’s well known that milk has these properties and it may certainly soothe the pain of heartburn for you.

It has been determined however that milk can cause more acid in the long run so it’s not advisable to drink milk as part of an acid reflux diet.

Acid Reflux Diet Tips

I’m not going to say that this is all that you need to do, but it’s helpful that you can pinpoint what helps and what hurts, so keep a diary and you’ll figure it out.

Try to have an absolutely neutral snack before bed. Crackers are perfect for this. One, maybe two, and that’s it.Increase the amount of complex carbs you eat. Brown bread, brown rice and brown pasta.Chew your food well. 36 times my father used to tell me.Don’t lie down after eating a meal.Cut out fatty foods, especially before bed.Eat little and often.Most of these tips look like common sense, and they are, but most people don’t follow a common sense eating plan. When something goes wrong, like GERD, we are all too eager to look for a cure. But remember an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. That’s never been more relevant than in this case.

By not eating the foods, and displaying the behaviors that cause acid reflux in the first place, we can avoid suffering from heartburn. And I think you’ll agree that it’ll probably be worth it. Then again, I know that many of us find it difficult to stop drinking coffee or eating chocolate, so a cure is also something we would look at.

Question by Erick: Help! 7 Weeks and Dr states Baby has reflux and change formula.?
Our boy was doing good on Enfamil new born. He was drinking 3-4 oz per feeding; when we went to the Dr office for the our child 1 month check up. She asked us? how was everything going…. So we told her exactly what we have seen in a matter of a month. Which was? At times the baby gets fuzzy and that sometimes he arcs his back after feeding . And automatically? She said! Acid reflux. Ok! So we roll with it and we started on his medication she prescribe to us (nizatidine) and also told us to bring in to the office 3 Poppy diapers. Which we did… And when she called us with the results she stated that she found traces of blood in his poop that means that he allergic to the cow protein which she states that is totally normal. So not only? the Dr give us meds for his acid reflux for our child she also made us change his formula to Enfamil Lipil Nutramigen with Enflora.

4 Days in, and the baby was allot more fussy and was crying like if something was killing him and was only drinking 2 ½ oz no more. It wasn’t your normal crying it was something totally different so we knew something was wrong. It mostly happen when he was trying to take a poop and the way he cries it sounds like it was burning him. This all started when we started to give him the formula she advise to put him on. So we had to make a decision and we went to Similac Sensitive because we did not want to feed him anymore of the formula the Dr order us to put him in.

When we did speak with the Dr about the situation she completely just said to take him of that Enfamil and put him on Similac Expert Care Alimentum. ummm! I am no Dr but isn’t the Enfamil Lipil Nutramigen the same thing as Similac Expert Care Alimentum.. Why would I put him on something that is going to do and be the same thing.. So we as parents decided to make a decision and go with Similac Sensitive and it has only been a day so we are trying to see what results we get from it.

We just think the Dr is not making the right decision. We are just trying to see if putting on the formula we chose is ok with our baby. we just think that Dr is really quick in Prescribing medication without even asking us 1 question about conditions or get information for us.

Any advice would help ?

Acid Reflux In Children- Knowing Acid Reflux Symptoms Can Help Get Your Child Faster Relief

Article by Frank Miller

Many parents fail to recognize the signs of acid reflux in children. This is unfortunate because many kids suffer needlessly. All that is needed to address this issue is to know the acid reflux symptoms in children and to act accordingly when you see them occur in your child or someone elses.

Acid reflux in children as well as infants can happen quite easily and is seen in many pediatric cases. Knowing acid reflux symptoms for them can go a long way towards getting quality acid reflux treatment. We take a look at these symptoms and how diet in acid reflux can help prevent future reoccurrences.

The various acid reflux symptoms include the child experiences pain, irritability, constant crying, abdominal and back pain, colic, burning in the esophagus and the stomach. Many a times the child may also have burps and have severe nausea and vomiting. Food may come up partly digested within an hour or they vomit the food completely. In fact there may even be projectile vomiting through the mouth and even the nose.

Another acid reflux symptom is pickiness about foodWhen there is acid reflux in children, they get extremely picky about food or even its texture and color. They may even develop some intolerance towards certain kind of food, for example milk. The case can become so severe, that they may eat just a bit of food inspite been hungry and can be fed only when they are asleep. This may not lead to ideal gain weight. But some children pay put on excessive weight due to comfort feeding and irregular feeding by the parents.

Problems with respiration and teethIn fact when acid reflux happens, there may also be tooth enamel erosion and excessive salivation. Other symptoms include wheezing, persistent cough, hoarseness in voice, throat clearing coughing in the night and labored breathing.

Sleep and behaviour patternsThe sleep patterns as well as the growth patterns are disturbed immensely. The child may get improper sleep or disturbed sleep. The child sleeps only when held or in an upright position. In fact the child gets extremely clingy to the mother and refuses to be put down. The child is extremely irritable during this time and become very fussy.

Parents feel extremely paranoid and at times guilty for giving medication for acid reflux in children. But without any options, they need to give medication that will help the children. The paediatrician can provide various alternatives for the same.

Diet for children suffering from acid reflux can be quite difficult. First of all aerated drinks should never be given as they increase the acid reflux in children.

Apples are a great source of iron and also help to keep the doctor and acid reflux at bay. Spices and chili should be used at the barest minimum since the increase the likelihood of heartburn and acid reflux. Chocolates, peppermint and even tomatoes (including tomato base sauces) can worsen the acid reflux. Diet for acid reflux should be followed extremely carefully for children and adults to reduce the problems at the earliest.

Citrus fruits such as oranges can also cause acid reflux in children. Fish, chicken and lean steaks without the fat doesn’t trigger acid reflux and can be easily given to children.

By keeping the different acid reflux symptoms in mind, you are far more likely get better performing acid reflux treatment for the young ones. Acid reflux in children is a serious issue that should not be taken lightly and steps should be taking immediately to improve the diet in acid reflux sufferers.

The animal protein is one of the worst culprits of acid forming sorts of meals, that and sugar.

It is well documented that acid forming meals increase the risks of degenerative and inflammatory illnesses like diabetes, coronary heart disease and cancers.

Alkaline forming foods are rich in “ionic” minerals, which act as electrolytes conducting mobile indicators, growing oxygen and attracting nutritional vitamins into your cells.

Acid forming meals draw you nearer to loss of life, whereas alkalizing foods help heal.

Question by Taylor B: Help with an immune system for a special girl!?
Hey guys, I need some advice/help, so let me fill you all in with the details, and I welcome ANYTHING!

Ok so I’m 21years old;
I have Muscular Dystrophy- form of Charcot-Marie-Tooth which falls into the category of neuro-muscular degenerative diseases;
I have RSD-reflexive sympathetic dystrophy also known as CRPS type 1-Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome type 1 which falls into the category of severe chronic pain disorder/auto-immune disorder;
I have HNPP-Hereditary Neuropathy to Pressure Palsy which also falls into the category of neuro-muscular degenerative diseases;
I also have TOS- Thoracic Outlet Syndrome which these days my specialist says is getting pretty severe;
I have severe GERD (so I’m picky about what I eat, however if theres a miracle fruit out there that would give me acid reflux- ID GET OVER IT!! hah);
I have severe chronic IBS-irritable bowel syndrome with an ulcer every now and then;
I have severe generalized anxiety disorder, post traumatic stress syndrome, and bouts of severe depression;
I currently am without insurance otherwise I would go visit a ton of specialists (but not to worry, I’ve applied through the state and everything so I’ll either be getting medical assistance or medicaid/medicare something so it won’t be more than a couple months) so I’m really looking for any kind of advice that I can get, I’m not looking to put my disabilities out there just for “attention” otherwise I would’ve done this 8years ago. Ok back to my back round…
21-disabled…My diet isn’t spectacular, but it is not poor; I eat a decent amount of fruits and veggies. Unfortunately I can’t exercise all but small, very quick exercises that don’t put too much strain on my muscles or put me in pain, so if anyone has any advice on exercising for disabled people, I’m all ears because I know that helps immune systems.
I also just had surgery back on December 10th 2010, and September 10th 2010 although my specialists knew it would send my RSD/CRPS type 1 back into remission however the surgeries were absolutely necessary (I had all wisdom teeth removed because of the amount of infections I was getting in my mouth, and then in Dec I had an appendectomy).
Due to my disabilities I need to be on a number of different medications in order to just function daily otherwise I’m in a hospital bed just laying there but the lists is as follows: cymbalta, neurontin, oxycodoneIR, prilosec.
I also had an experimental, non-FDA treatment performed on me to see if it helped my RSD/CRPS type1- it was a “ketemine treatment” which consisted of me sitting in a dark room for 10 days 5.5 hours each day receiving a ketemine drip, unfortunately with the combo of Muscular Dystrophy and RSD/CRPS type 1 even the strongest of nerve blocks doesn’t work, hence me being so young and on narcotics.
I consume absolutely no alcohol except half a glass of Champagne on new years, I am a non-smoker as well, I know some people may find this hard to believe since I’m young and such but why would I lie to a bunch of anonymous people?
So now I know I need to improve my immune system, for the past year (and previous years it was pretty bad but it has gotten much worse to the point of what I’m about to explain) every month for about 2 weeks, sometimes 3 weeks I am sick, vomiting for days at a time, I can’t hold anything down, I get severely dehydrated I’ve gone to the hospital a shit load of times however without insurance now I don’t go as often unless I’m so dehydrated I pass out, which happens quite often, I get alot of UTIs, bladder infections, and other types of misc. infections, stomach bugs, and countless viruses.
I mean I’m down to try anything- aromatherapy, revising my diet, specialized exercise, I mean NO BODY HOLD BACK! I’m getting very desperate to leave this all behind and when I do get my insurance back I plan to visit a nutritionists and if there is one my insurance covers- an immune specialists (however I know they are very expensive!)
So I think that pretty much covers everything, and I thank every single person’s response and time anyone took to read this, Thank you again, -TB.

Question by rgh_argh: Acid reflux or GERD help?
I have had the worst acid reflux. It all happened at night when i was lying down on my bed and my stomach was bloated. Then some kind of liquid went up all the way up to my throat and nose which I think was caused by stomache acid. I have it untreated for 3 months and my doctor diagnose that I have acid reflux now or is it (GERD)? The doctor is telling me to take (omeprazole) 20 mg 2 tablets a day, which is a generic medication for Prilosec. I have taken it for 3 days and I have these tingling side effects and i stopped taking them. The acid has left burning and itchy sensation in my throat for months now and I was sure my esophagus might be damaged without knowing. I am scared of stomach ulcers and cancer someday if it is untreated early. Please tell me if this has happened to anyone and what PPIs or antacids work for you and cure you from GERD and acid reflux? Do you think what I have is GERD and not Acid reflux now since it has been months now and hasn’t gone away? Thanks. I wished Prilosec has worked for me but it caused side effects, do you think Prevacid or other brands will help? I am willing to try if it helps reduce stomach acid from coming up into my esophagus as well as healing it. Was there OTC medicines you tried that helped cured it? How long did it take if so?

I should avoid spicy, vinegar, citrus, fried foods. I am going to start a diet for my GERD or acid reflux now so I can heal my burnt tissues. I was told not to drink carbonated, caffeinated, coffee, tea. I should also drink more water and eat more vegetables and less meat because meat causes more acid in stomach. I have to avoid orange, lemon, lime, garlic, onion, tomato too. I heard ginger is good for stomach so I bought some capsules to take. I was also told not to eat a heavy meal at night before going to bed. Tell me what foods to avoid and what foods to put into my diet that will help promote faster healing. What are some alkaline foods to help neutralize the acid in my stomach? What are other acidic foods i need to avoid too?

Best answer:

Answer by nochocolate
GERD and Acid reflux are similar. Hopefully you have tried Pepcid and Zantac first before the omeprazole. I think omeprazole should be the last resort. You are on the right tract to changing your diet. Weight loss helped me a lot. Don’t think you have to worry so much about the damage, some people go for years without getting a proper treatment. Good you’re starting now instead of waiting.

Question by Crystal D: Please help- period one week late, two negative at-home tests.?
I haven’t gotten much help with my concerns, I’m pretty sure that no one is really reading it, so please read through and try to help me figure out what may be happening! My period is a week late, I have been having heart-burn and acid reflux, minor discomfort that feels like slight menstrual cramps, but no spotting or bleeding. I have also been occassionally dizzy, unusually clumsy, and somewhat disoriented/confused easily. I am not on birth control, we use the “pull-out” method (which we know is not the most effective. we aren’t going to “try” to get pregnant yet, but if it happens, we will not be unhappy at all) I have not had any unusual stress, no changes in diet or weight, there are no signs of infection I can see. I took 2 at-home First Response tests, one about 3 days ago in the evening, and one first thing yesterday morning. I have one daughter, who is 4. She was an emergency c-section. With her I had my period til the 3rd month, no morning sickness or discomfort. I am not upset if I am pregnant, I am just concerned and confused because this is not acting like a pregnancy. I don’t have health insurance, and since I’m not in pain or testing positive, I don’t want to go to the Doctor yet and waste a hundred bucks to hear “you’re a hypochondriac, chill out.” If you have any idea _f what might be going on, please help!

Best answer:

Answer by self_existent_one
I wouldn’t worry about it, unless you are one month late. Just wait it out, then go to the doctor if it doesn’t come back good luck

A common ailment that individuals are concerned about today is acid reflux disease. In case you really feel a burning sensation in your abdomen after eating and have a bitter taste within your mouth afterwards, you may be suffering from this situation, which is also recognized as heartburn.

The symptoms can create a discomfort that may be unbearable, which can be why much more and far more men and women are trying to find a successful acid reflux cure.

When heartburn occurs, muscles as part of your esophagus are not properly working. As a result, your stomach acid flows to your esophagus and you begin to really feel that burning, uncomfortable sensation inside your stomach.

Physicians can prescribe medications for your symptoms, but there are many side effects associated with those drugs. Therefore, many people are searching for a natural cure.

When taking natural remedies, your stomach becomes calm and gastric acids are prevented from forming. Thus, eating healthy and maintaining a balanced diet is a very effective treatment. Eating fruits and vegetables such as bananas, pineapples, carrots, and cabbage provide good natural remedies.

It is critical to note that people suffering from this problem require to stay away from foods that they know which will aggravate symptoms, including fatty foods, acidic foods, caffeine, chocolates, spicy meals and fried meals. Cigarettes should also be avoided.

Another heartburn trigger is stress. Try to avoid a stressful and busy way of life and exercise often. If you are overweight, try and lose weight to relieve the pressure on your abdomen. This will reduce the amount of gastric acids formed with your belly. You’ll also alleviate pressure on your belly by wearing comfortable, loose clothes.

By being disciplined with your food choices and lifestyle, you’ll be able to avoid taking medication for your condition, and instead use natural home remedies for an effective, successful acid reflux cure.

Over the years of research, I have found one “effective” product that can help you Eliminate Heartburn Pains and Acid Reflux by teaching you how to cure it using this proven method without side effects to your health.

My girlfriend has been having strange stomach and chest pains for about 9 months now. They’re sharp pains that don’t always come in the same place. She rarely has heartburn. About two months ago she started having stomach spasms that’ll list anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. She’s never drank alcohol, smoked, or taken illegal drugs of any kind.

She’s been seeing doctors for a few months now. She saw a specialist and had a camera put down her throat, a CAT scan, an ultrasound and a bunch of blood tests. The doctors are saying that it’s acid reflux with esophageal spasms, but prilosec only helps when she takes two pills a day, and even then it just helps the pain, doesn’t eliminate it. Narcotic painkillers don’t do much for the pain.

Is there anything that the doctors could be missing? Could it be a heart or lung problem? Does acid reflux make sense? If it is acid reflux with esophageal spasms, is there anything we can do to help the condition?

I have been feeling nausea, and burping a lot, heartburn, and the acid taste in my mouth, regurgitation, and feels like a lump in my throat. I also have been having stomach pains. Now my mom, and doctor told me that acid reflux causes pain around the gall bladder area(my gall bladder is fine, i got that checked already). and that’s where some pain is…so would the nausea and the feeling icky cause the stomach pains? because my mom has acid reflux, and she gets stomach pains also (i had my blood checked and it came back just fine so nothing is wrong with me). My mom thinks, and is pretty sure that my acid reflux is just acting up badly…ok thanks!
I take omeprazole daily for acid reflux.

In my journey to find foods for acid reflux that I should be eating I ran into lots of conflicting information. I set out on the task to control my condition naturally and figure out what were the best foods for acid reflux and which foods to avoid.

Kathryn Whitaker was a long time sufferer of acid reflux. She did in depth study on foods for acid reflux and here are some of her finding. These are guidelines to at least start with and try for yourself.

First lest cover some foods that are NOT foods for acid reflux. These include fatty foods, citrus fruits and juices, mashed potatoes, butter, tomatoes and pasta.

It is also very helpful to eat small meals throughout the day. Acid reflux can be controlled with diet, but it takes discipline and constant monitoring. There are also foods for acid reflux that can help and we will talk about later.

Acid reflux is not helped by milk. This is a common myth that many people believe. Although, milk can bring some relief it creates more long term issues with acid reflux. Milk, ice cream certain kinds of cheese are not foods for acid reflux

Some foods for acid reflux include apples, baked potatoes, eggs, fish and whole wheat breads. Coffee can flare this condition no matter how it is brewed. Alcohol also not included in the foods for acid reflux. Small quantities occasionally may be okay after you get your condition under control.

A common home remedy for acid reflux is cinnamon. Eating a piece of cinnamon toast slowly will help to alleviate the burning sensation and heartburn. Cinnamon is the best food for acid reflux that I have found.

The problem with all of this information is that everyones body is different. Some of this stuff will work for you and some of it will not. It is very helpful to keep a food journal and when your acid reflux flares up. This will be the best way to determine foods for acid reflux that work for you.
